Differences in predator-avoidance behavior between two invasive gobies and their native competitors

چکیده
Abstract Globally, fish are frequently introduced beyond their native range. Some, like Ponto-Caspian gobies, becoming invasive, achieving high colonization rates and constituting frequent prey for predators. However, little is known about the effectiveness of antipredator behaviors invaders, which may shape role in invaded community contribute to invasion success. We compared invasive gobies species after detection by predator, when danger becomes direct. studied 2 pairs, each consisting an co-occurring environment belonging same guild: (1) racer goby Babka gymnotrachelus versus European bullhead Cottus gobio, (2) monkey Neogobius fluviatilis gudgeon Gobio facing a naïve predator (the Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis). analyzed single individuals (escaping, staying shelter, activity) predators (activity, searching, following, capturing, latency consumption). In presence, was less active more often managed escape capture than goby. The escaped before succeeded later with goby, whereas no differences ingestion time occurred between results suggest that, terms hunting effort predators, equivalent or profitable analogs, can facilitate integration into local food webs.

Coevolution between native and invasive plant competitors: implications for invasive species management
Invasive species may establish in communities because they are better competitors than natives, but in order to remain community dominants, the competitive advantage of invasive species must be persistent. Native species that are not extirpated when highly invasive species are introduced are likely to compete with invaders. When population sizes and genetic diversity of native species are large...

15 صفحه اولBehavioral differences of invasive container-dwelling mosquitoes to a native predator.
Aquatic prey show behavioral modifications in the presence of predation-risk cues that alleviate their risk from predation. Aedes albopictus (Skuse), Aedes japonicus (Theobald), and Culex pipiens L. are invasive mosquitoes in North America, and their larvae are prey for the native mosquito predator, Toxorhynchites rutilus (Coquillett). Ae. albopictus and Ae. japonicus are recent invaders, where...
متن کاملInvasive and Non-Invasive Congeners Show Similar Trait Shifts between Their Same Native and Non-Native Ranges
Differences in morphological or ecological traits expressed by exotic species between their native and non-native ranges are often interpreted as evidence for adaptation to new conditions in the non-native ranges. In turn this adaptation is often hypothesized to contribute to the successful invasion of these species. There is good evidence for rapid evolution by many exotic invasives, but the e...
